Some USA Today Poll Numbers:
- 53% of Americans disapprove of Bush’s handling of the Schiavo case
- 76% of Americans disapprove of Congress’ handling of the Schiavo case
- By a 2-1 margin, Americans feel the religious right has too much influence in the Bush administration
- 55% view the Republican Party as the party of government intervention into their personal lives
- 53% view the Democratic Party as not-interfering with moral issues
And house majority leader Tom Delay is in hot water again (NYT). Apparently his wife and daughter have been paid more than half a million dollars by his PAC since 2001.
Sounds like it is time to start holding the “moral majority” to some actual moral standards. The momentum against these cretins seems to be building… let’s keep it going.
“Sounds like it is time to start holding the ‘moral majority’ to some actual moral standards. The momentum against these cretins seems to be building… let’s keep it going.”
1. Who exactly are you aiming your frustation at? Republicans? Tom Delay? Conservative Christians? All the above?
2. Who are you calling the moral majority and how has the moral majority acted immorally? What do you mean by “actual moral standards?”
3. Is the momentum really against conservatives, if that is who “cretins” refer to? I am a Christian, Republic, Conservative, etc. but I am also a federalist. I am not happy about Congress’ recent actions. But it would be improper to infer that I have switched camps because of those recent actions.
1. Republicans who maintain that the party stands for less government, while clearly supporting the intervention of the government into more private matters everyday. Tom Delay, for being a hypocrite and very likely a crook. Conservative Christians who denounce “activist judges” when it comes to abortion rights, but then who denounce judges for not being activist when it comes to a pet cause.
2. This would be those that claim moral values without actually exhibiting any. I put it in quotes specifically because I believe that many of the current members of Congress are merely giving lip service to “moral values” without actually having any. It shouldn’t be confused with the actual Moral Majority organization. Sorry if that was unclear.
3. No, the “cretins” are not necessarily Christians or Conservatives; they could just as well be liberals. However, in this case they aren’t. There are many Christians (present company, for example) who I know to be reasonable and thoughtful people. In this case the cretins are people like Tom Delay and John Cornyn.
They are those who use the tragedy of Terri Schaivo for political grand-standing, while politically maneuvering to hide all of their own ethical transgressions. Or those that claim to defend life, to “err on the side of life” when they think it’s politically expedient to do so, but not when it means taking a hard stand (like ending capital punishment).
They are those who make statements akin to calls for violence against members of the judiciary because those judges had the ‘gall’ to uphold our laws and Constitution.
Those people, in my view, are unequivocally cretins.
Dave!:
Thanks for the clarification. You make some good criticisms. From a Republican standpoint, I want to slap my party leaders over this whole situation.
