John Dvorak is ga-ga for Skype. I just tried Skype for the first time over the weekend with my friend, Ken. In addition to Skype, we also tried out SIP Phone both over software and with hardware, and finally hardware based BroadVoice.
Honestly, I was blown away. VOIP is so much better quality than I could have imagined. Skype sounded absolutely fantastic. SIPPhone had some bad interface issues, but was still quite good. And BroadVoice was also pretty amazing. My jaw really dropped with all of them… POTS phones are in big trouble. I will never have a land-line based phone again.
Yipe! Skype!

Hey, you want to do a Skype podcast? I’ve been looking for an opportunity to try using Skype to record interviews so you would make a perfect guinea pig, if you’re interested. You could explain to me how the heck you’re getting through law school while working full time. Oh, and you were going to talk about how you’re using Devonthink at some point, which would also be interesting, at least to me, and that’s really what this is all about it, isn’t it? 😉
I agree, Skype rocks!
If you have family oversees, it can be especially useful. My sister (from Poland) and I have tried it last week and it was fabulous. The quality was so clear that she could hear me sipping my coffee…Amazing.
Now I can talk to her for free about everything and nothing without concern of how many minutes I have left on my calling card (conversations used to be quite costly).
Technology…it does amazing things.
I’d love to do a SkypeCast sometime! I’ll send you e-mail…
