   I suspect the pence (and the American equivalent – the penny) are only kept because of sales tax.
   I think people rather deal with inconveniences of these little buggers than having to deal with increased tax percentage that would have rid of this problem. (e.g. round up to the nearest 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, etc.)
