Ed Gillespie–one of the authors of the Contract with America, on which House Republicans ran in 1994–says, “Our party is still better when it comes to spending than the Democrats…”
Ain’t that the truth? Spend, spend, spend… that’s all the current bunch of Republicans can do these days. Hello record deficits! Oh, and covering up creepy sex scandals…
I am a Republican and it makes my stomach sick when I think about the money the Republicans have spent, but, if the Democrats were in power, the government would have spent much more. There is a post over at Volokh on this subject right now. Click here.
Well, I disagree that the Dems would have spent more…
But more troubling is the idea that instead of cleaning house, the typical response to criticisms of the _supposed_ values of the Republican party is “well, we’re not as bad as the Democrats”.
If that’s the best excuse Republican’s can come up with, that’s a pretty sad state of affairs… and precisely why voters are getting fed up with the hypocrisy.
Maybe the Dems would have spent more… maybe they wouldn’t have. There’s one sure way to find out now: vote the current majority out of office.
